How do I properly light stick incense?

I've noticed that there appears to be a difference in both scent and quality of the burn when lighting the incense and leaving the flame to self-extinguish. Any suggestions on a good way of lighting?

1. I've always just lit the end and blew out the flame after it burned for a few seconds. I've noticed it smells better that way. If you let the flame burn out on its own it kind of burns the end too much and changes the smell.
2. I have always lit the tip then blown on it a little until I see the 'cherry' at the end, then blow hard enough to take the flame away. Just kind of smokes until the end.
3. When I light incense, I let it burn for a little bit(like ten seconds) and then blow it out until smoke starts rising. Then, it burns! I always let it self-extinguish.
