What is incense sticks made out of and how can one make their own?

Also, what are the exact ingredients in the incense powder coating the sticks? For cinnamon incense sticks for a certain ritual can a real cinnamon stick be used as a substitute? Are there any other incense stick scents that combine cinnamon? Is it possible to add real cinnamon powder to the incense sticks? Does Wal-Mart sell cinnamon incense sticks?

  1. Unless it's a blended incense stick, incense found on sticks are powdered herbs, essentially glued a stick. I don't think lighting a whole cinnamon stick would be advised. Cinnamon is a VERY potent spice. If you want to burn cinnamon (or any herb) less is more. Anywhere from your local dollar store, to yes, wal-mart stocks incense in a wide variety of flavors. EDIT: agreed with Tigger...I meant essentially glued with oils placed within.
  2. Many different leaves crumbled up mixed with oils, formed into sticks and dried.
  3. Incenses are made of herbal materials mixed with charcoal (so they burn evenly), resins (to enable them to hold a shape), and sometimes soaked with essential oils. You can use powdered herbs on a charcoal (NOT a briquet from the grill - they sell charcoals specially made for this in religious stores) as well as cones or sticks. Wal-mart might sell cinnamon incense, but make sure it's made with natural oils and herbs instead of a cheap punk soaked in synthetic fragrance oil.
