Can I burn incense in the same room as a goldfish tank?

I have a vague recollection that somebody once told me that strong smells upset goldfish. I can't remember who told me and whether it was just that you shouldn't have strong smells on your hands when you put them in the water. I love burning incense, but I'm worried that it might make my fish unhappy. Does anybody know? I have a 300 litre tank which has a plastic lid on the top.

  1. NO! Whatever you do, don't let the goldfish see incense.
  2. Its fine i do it all the time..
  3. No thats a myth - your fish will be fine if you burn incense
  4. no insence will affect the water at all unless teh residu falls into it directly. if you have some smoke near it you will notice it never touchs. it just sorta floats above it. your fish are safe as long as you dont stick the incense in it.
  5. absolutely. it wont harm them
  6. Its fine, but just dont do it near the air pump (if you have one) becuase the smoke will get sucked into the pump and get pumped into the water!
  7. Yes you can burn incense in the room.It won't endanger the fish in any way possible unless you have very concentrated incense on your hands then it might upset the fish but otherwise it will do no harm.Good luck
  8. Hi Diane, I can't say for certain whether it will cause problems but I certainly would not do that. This is because the airstone draws anything in the air into the tank & immediately diffuses it into the water, smoking for example is very dangerous as introduces nicotine into the water which is a poison. Another dangerous substance is house paint-using that anywhere near your tank is asking for trouble. Same goes for any sprays, inhalers, perfumes, deodorants etc, if you must use them, always try to use them in another room. Due to the various types of incense it may be that some are less toxic or even harmless while others may be quite lethal to fish, no way of telling unless you are a chemist/scientist etc. probably best to err on the side of caution & keep them well way from your fish if you must burn incense.
