I just lit it, blew it out, and set it in a drinking glass on my desk in front of the fan. Is there anything wrong with this? Am I doing it right? What are some tips? and why do people light incense? also, can incense hide the smell of cigarette smoke? and what are the spiritual benefits of incense? which smell is the best? sorry I have so many questions. thanks :)

- I think your making this harder than it is. Go with what you like. But for centuries, societies have had particular incense for meditation, etc.
- Incense is quick way to get rid of bad smells that you don't like, such as cigarette smoke, stale fish, and even litter boxes. Its said to be that incense can make a tremendous difference to the entire magikal process. Its used to cleanse and create sacred space, as an offering both on and off the altar, the create magikal atmosphere, to help the practitioner acheive specific mental states. The effects of incense can have a deep impact on both the major rituals and minor magick. I found a link that is about how to burn incense and i think it will help, it says Light the tip of the incense . Gently blow out the flame to produce a delicate wisp of smoke. Place on or in holder as follows: For Sticks - place the unlit end in its burner. For Coils and Cones - place gently on holder. For Spirals - hang from holder Your room will quickly be filled with fragrance. Avoid drafty areas such as open windows, doors, etc. so that ashes will not be scattered. Keep incense out of reach of children and pets. Place the burner on a tray to be sure that ashes will not get onto the floor or furniture. And thats all the tips that I thought be most usfull. Also the best smell depends on what you like. Theres many different kinds and it wont be hard finding the best kind. People use incense to get rid of smells they dont like, and also sometimes its used for relaxation, it says that incense played a large part in modern development of aromatherapy, based on the facts that certain aromas have beneficial effects on mind and body. also the web site i found this in has a way to help u chose the best incense for you(http://www.incense-man.co.uk/meditate.html). I hope my information was helpful to you. =) have a nice day!
- I don't like to use incense, I've found it is prone to accidentally burning things like desk tops and furniture. It can mask some smells, but cigarette smoke gets into anything and a non smoker can smell it a mile away, most ex-smokers can smell it even better. So if you are trying to hide it from a parent or spouse, nothing short of a shower and clean clothes and smoking outside will help. If you want a natural way to freshen the air use an oil wicking jar. They are available everywhere now days, it is simple a jar with scented oil and a couple reeds, add reeds to increase scent, take away a few to reduce scent.
